Villány wine region

Villány is a wine region in the southwest of Hungary, located just west of the Danube River and within walking distance of the border with Croatia.

Villány Hungary’s most southerly wine region, is one of the most popular destinations for red lovers as the fact famous for its full-bodied and spicy reds.

Hungary’s warmest vine region has long, dry, sub-Mediterranean summers and mild winters.

Wine-making has long traditions in this region and Villány (along with Szekszárd, which is about 60km away) is considered the premier red wine producer of the country. In the Villány Wine Region development was built on strong foundations: a respect for traditions.

It is particularly famed for its red which account for most of production. These are often Hungarian twists on the classic Bordeaux Blend.
Although single variety Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot wines are produced here, the majority of Villány wines feature a combination of the three, with a few other varieties thrown in.
One can also find the Cabernets and Merlot blended with less usual French partners such as Syrah and Pinot Noir, as well as Austro-Hungarian varieties such as Kadarka, Kékfrankos (Blaufränkisch) and Portugieser. Schiller, a pinkish wine made from co-fermented red and white grapes, is a traditional specialty.

The region is home to several famous historic wine towns and numerous historic cellars:the town of Villány itself, Villánykövesd, Palkonya, Kisharsány, Nagyharsány and others. Around Siklós there are many old press houses dotted around the vineyards. Such sites have become important tourist attractions on the Villány-Siklós Wine Route.
